Ostia Antica was brought back to light during the excavation that took place in the fascism period. It’s the second most important surviving Roman city in Italy after the archeological area of Pompeii. Ostia was the main port which supplied Rome not only with all the goods but also gave the city a form of protection from all the possible attacks from the sea. In the 2nd century AD Ostia, at the height of its prosperity (some estimates suggest 50,000 inhabitants), changed to a commercial harbour connected to the Imperial Harbours of Claudius and Trajan. The city was enriched in this period by the rebuilding of the Forum, new baths, public warehouses (Lat. horrea), guild seats (Lat. scholae),multi-storey residential buildings
A detailed walk will help visitors understand and realize how everyday life took place in those days between Insule (Homes), Theaters, Temples and Thermal Baths.
Ostia is about 15 miles (45 minutes based on traffic) south from the center of Rome. We provide transfer to and back from Ostia and a local official guide for 3hrs approx. inside the ruins.
