The town of Siena is famous in the world for the Palio as well as for its incredible architectural variety and for the beautiful landscape surrounding the city. It is situated in Tuscany and prospers today from a combination of finance and tourism thanks to its beautiful artistic heritage. Piazza del Campo in Siena with its characteristic 9-wedge shell shape is considered one of the most beautiful squares in the world. Since 1300 it has been the center of life in Siena and has served as a market and gathering place for the Sienese during important political moments, parties and jousting.
San Gimignano rises on a hill, dominating the Elsa Valley with its medieval towers, churches and monasteries. In 1282 the government of San Gimignano promulgated a law that prevented the demolition of old houses except to build more beautiful ones. Within a century, San Gimignano would reach its maximum splendor and then its decline, which saved it from radical changes. The medieval town is therefore almost identical to medieval San Gimignano.
